OPTITALLA. Methods to help choose a size using anthropometric data

The aim here is to develop a method to help users choose a suitable size without the need to physically try on the product. The method created will initially be aimed at the footwear industry, but will be transferable to other industrial sectors that manufacture and sell products by sizes such as garments, orthopaedic products and personal protection equipment.

Aims

This third year of the project is based on the results obtained from the research that enabled a precise 3D reconstruction of the foot or body to be created using a few images, and which can be used in smartphones or low-cost devices.

The first-year identified 3D morphotypes and models of the foot and body that can be parametrized. A model of user-product interaction was also generated that is applicable to clothes and footwear, and a proof of concept of the model was carried out to be implemented for footwear. The second year developed methods enabling the foot and footwear to be objectively characterised, as well as algorithms for modelling the interaction between the foot and footwear. The first functional prototypes were also developed in laboratory conditions, and conceptual designs of a system architecture were created to be transferred to the industry.

These results acted as the basis for the research and development planned for this year of the project, which will enable a method to be developed to help users choose the right size without the need to physically try on the product.

The knowledge and technology generated will not only have potential for development in future products and services, leading to a better shopping experience on the Internet and fewer product returns; but will also be an opportunity to modernise and transform the shopping experience at traditional points-of-sale by digitalising the physical activity of trying on the products in the shop.
